IsarMUN Special Features

Crisis
A new feature of this year’s IsarMUN will be a peace threatening crisis in the Security Council. During the crisis you will receive fictional news reports, intelligence briefings, emergency situations, and secret government letters. This crisis will give you the opportunity to experience the high-level stress of diplomatic life, the need for diplomatic and negotiating skills, and importance of immediate action. Diplomats of the Security council will bear special responsibility in order to prevent global chaos. This requires solid background knowledge on international affairs and world relations; in fact a truly diplomatic challenge.

IsarMUN goes UNFCCC

IsarMUN is given the unique opportunity to send a small delegation of 2-4 people as representatives of the UN Association of Germany (DGVN) as part of the delegation of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (UNFCCC, COP-15), where a post-Kyoto Treaty is being negotiated and hopefully agreed upon. "World leaders have called for a comprehensive, ambitious and fair international climate change deal to be clinched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen, 7-18 December 2009." (UNFCCC website) This conference takes place from December 7th - December 18th 2009 in Copenhagen/ Denmark. There will be most heads of states, foreign ministers/ ministers of environment, world media and hundreds of NGOs with a total of about 10000 participants.

There is no participation fee, but you will need to book a flight to Copenhagen and arrange accomodation. We am currently negotiating with the Delegation of the London School of Economics to get up to four beds from their youth hostel reservation (Hostel im Malmö, bed for about 15 Euro/ night), although you should be prepared to find private accomodation (stay with host family or rent a private flat for about 30 Euro/night) if this should prove unsuccessful.

If you are interested in experiencing a REAL UN Conference, in learning more about how big international conferences really work and especially in Climate Change, then please apply UNTIL NOVEMBER 14th, November 2nd (10pm) to

secretary-general@isarmun.de.

The following information will be needed:

1. Letter of Motivation (one page)
Please answer the following questions:

What do you study and in which semester are you? Will you stay for the whole conference/ 12 days or only for parts of the conference - if so, which days? Are you dependent on arranged accomodation or will you be able to find private accomodation on your own? Are you going to participate in the IsarMUN UNFCCC committee (Dec 4-Dec6)?

2. CV (one page in English, to be submitted to WFUNA, sections: education (please include current and Abitur grades), work experience/ internships, MUN experience, other activities, languages: if you have taken an English test, eg. TOEFL, please include the score you achieved)

The decision on your nomination will be based on your letter of motivation and CV and take the following criteria into account: Your interest in Climate Change, MUN experience, performance in studies and time to graduation as well as time you will spend at UNFCCC.

Rules of Procedure Workshop
A former MUN experience is not obligatory for the participation in IsarMUN 2009. However, we highly recommend to you the participation in our rules of procedure workshop if you have not taken part in at least 3 MUNs or less. In the workshop we will provide you with the basic knowledge about the rules of procedure.

Guest Speakers
IsarMUN guest speakers will talk before our committees and give a deeper insight into one of each council’s topic. They are experts regarding the issue discussed in each council and will answer the delegates’ questions.

Career Panel
In order to give participating IsarMUN delegates an impression of how people work in different spheres where they can actually apply the knowledge they gain by participating in Model United Nations simulations they will meet three speakers of different fields of work. At the career panel they will come to know what a UN related career might look like but delegates can also inquire the career panel speakers.
